Hey everyone!

For our project, my group was planning on doing something to utilize "seasonal foods." we were going to go to an apple orchard and talk to an apple farmer, then pick a bunch of apples ourselves and use them to make various delicious baked goods and crafts (from caramel apples to pies to popuri and candles). then we were going to try and sell them, and donate the money to an as-yet-unidentified group/organization. we were also thinking of using other fall foods besides apples, such as pumpkin seeds, ect.

hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather!

I have been increasingly intrigued by the localization of our food at U of M, and in Ann Arbor more generally. Mallory Baran, Allison Carron, Mary Crylen and myself are looking into the community gardens and farmer's markets in the area. At first some of our ideas in the process were to find ways to advertise and spread awareness for these groups, to get the word out to students about the availability and ease of buying and eating locally grown foods. We could do this through posters, flyers, handouts, a youtube video, an ad on facebook. We had even thought of creating a proposal for a new and bigger community garden at a central location on campus. The one near East Quad is very small, and little advertised. But after a visit to the farmer's market, and speaking with Shannon, a local professor here at the University as well as the owner of Brines Farms, we really want to look into how we can make this school as agriculturally aware and food sustainable as possible. He prompted us to look into a group here at U of M called the sustainable agriculture working group, which is comprised of graduate students, professors, and undergraduates looking to have organic farming classes offered. Shannon also suggested talking to the East Quad cafeteria director, Buzz Cummings, who works with local farmers and people from the farmer's markets as often as possible to minimize travel for food. I think moving in this direction gives us a new focus and we'd like to continue to explore how we can make progress in this area.

My group is trying to put all of those red cups littering the ground after football parties to good use. We are still gathering some initial research about the material and what we can do with it.

My group partners and I are going to visit recycling centers in and around the Ann Arbor area. With recycled goods we are going to design and create a clothing line directed toward our age group. We will record a "runway show" of our recycled clothing line in the Diag.

For our group project we want to better inform U of M students on what they are eating day to day. We plan on visiting different food places on campus (Panda Express, Quiznos, Beansters, Wendy's, pizza places, etc). We want to find out more information on what really goes into these food items, who their food supplier is, if any unnecessary chemicals are involved... We want to spread awareness and teach students which options are smarter and which ones are closest to the natural food source. We are going to create a website with all of this information that is easily accessible.

My group believes that the Kerrytown farmers’ market is a vital part of Ann Arbor. We want to see how the market affects the local community, what the importance of it is, and why people believe that locally grown food is so important that they will pay more money for it. We would like to start a project that helps get little kids to college students excited about the farmers’ market. I know that many of my friends didn’t know the time and location of it, most didn’t even know that it exists. This is something that my group feels should change. Now we are focused on getting more information about the farmers, the market, and the people who either go to it or don’t.

My group and I are going to research restaurants in ann arbor. We have 5 categories of research--pizza, sandwiches, soups/salads, chinese food, and ice cream/frozen yogurt. In each section we will visit different restaurants providing that type of food. We will compare the differences in nutrition, preservatives, and anything else we can recieve information on. We will figure out what restaurants are the healthiest option when ordering a sandwich, pizza, etc. For our visual, we plan on making a website displaying all our research and the positives and negatives of restaurants in each section.

My group is planning on going around to local eateries in Ann Arbor and dissecting where their source of food originates from, particularly their meat products. I think we were going to pick a broader topic, and our individual research projects would be focused on sub-categories (such as poultry, red meat, etc.)

My group was concerned with the use of art supplies in the building. Often classes like TMP and CFC are material heavy and the leftover scraps are trashed. Also, a student having made a mistake may just need a little piece of a given material but have to buy a giant sheet, board, etc. to get what they need. So, we were thinking we would like to set up a recycling center in the School of Art & Design. There, people could leave their bigger scrap pieces or disassemble projects they no longer needed. Conversely, students only needing a small amount of material for a new project or a trial could come and go through the scraps to find what they need. This would effectively recycle the materials we use for our projects while cutting back on unnecessary consumption and waste. We need to find a good location and find a way to monitor the recycle bin so that it does not get misused.

For the group project, my group is planning on doing an installation project, hopefully in the arb and before the weather gets too bad. We would like to recycle materials and use them to mimic the environment surrounding us. For instance using cans and shaping them into flowers and plants we see around us and painting them and placing them with the similar plants and flowers. Or, creating creatures like birds and placing them in a tree. All the while documenting our work and planning through photographs, and possibly video.

Hey Peeps,
The other members of my group, Yonit and Shif, are in Hillel here. We've decided to research the Carbon Footprint of the entire building, and then do an installation piece to display at the building. Then we want to do some sort of brochure or competition between floors to help lower the footprint.

Our group is creating a pamphlet on the sources of food from local restaurants. We're hoping to be able to distribute these through money from potential advertisers in the publication. Hopefully we will also get businesses to realize where food comes from and how it is manufactured is an important issue to consumers.

Emma Bumstead, Marcia Kosin and I were thinking about labeling trees in the Diag with their English and Latin names. We were going to post the plaque in the ground below the tree so that everyone would be able to tell what it is. We also would make brochures and have a little "cheat sheet" that tells you how to identify a few of the more common trees in Michigan and how we were able to identify the trees in the Diag. To do this, we would need to talk with the grounds management at U of M. We still need to verify the idea with Professor Trumpey.

For our group project we are focusing on happiness and material wealth. We will be making several maps showing material goods. To show this we will construct the continents out of common material goods the countries (continents) have. Another map will show wealth by color. The third map will show the happiness level also by color. It is changed from the original idea, and Jordan Ruch is also in the same group.

for our group project, we are planing to educate and convert collage students in the metro Detroit area from traditional light bulbs to compact florescent light bulb. Through the invasion of dorm rooms our small army of CFL missionaries will save the souls (or at least reduce the carbon foot print) of as many as we can, also hoping to make as many new CFL missionaries as possible.

My group project is focused on recycling and composting for college age students and what the challenges to getting this group of people to start recycling and composting. Some questions that we're interested in pursuing are: Why do some people compost/recycle and why do others not? What motivates people to compost/recycle? What would make it easier for people to compost or recycle? We plan on visiting the Ann Arbor recycling center, going to coops and going to East Quad, which supposedly has a good food-prep composting system, which means they are composting the food preparation waste. We're hoping to develop a system that encourages recycling and composting, even if the impact isn't that great directly, because the act of recycling and composting helps people become more aware of their own consumption habits.
